It doesn’t matter whether you run a small business or you run a small country…there’s one thing we all have in common. We each get the same 24 hours each day to accomplish our tasks. So, why is it that some people manage to get so much more done in their 24 hours than others? What do they know that you can use? Here are 5 simple tips that many entrepreneurs use to minimize the time it takes to get the maximum accomplished.
- Plan your day
If you take just 20 minutes at the beginning or end of each day to plan what you need to accomplish in the following 24 hours, you may be surprised at how much easier it is to stay organized and focused. Try organizing your daily “to do” list into things that must get done and things that you would like to accomplish, if time allows. Writing everything down makes it easier for you to track your performance and ensure nothing gets forgotten. Imagine how much of your brain’s energy you could free up simply by not having to remember everything you have to do each day.
- Expect the unexpected...everyday
As an entrepreneur, you know that the one thing you can always count on is that something you didn’t count on will come up every day. If each of your days is fully scheduled with no room to spare, these unexpected events and emergencies can cause you a great deal of stress. You may also miss out on something interesting if you are too busy to take advantage of an opportunity when one arises.
- Delegate what you can
You may feel like you must have your hands in everything your company does but you know deep down that there are some things that are not worth your valuable time. A recent Globe and Mail article advises entrepreneurs to consider hiring someone to handle some of the more routine tasks like invoicing, filing or scheduling while you spend your time in higher level activities designed to move the business forward. Delegating may be the single hardest thing for an entrepreneur to do but it can also be the thing that allows your business to become more successful.
- Put technology to work for you
Sitting for an hour in traffic to attend a one hour meeting may not always be worth your time. Of course, there are always going to be meetings that you must attend in person for a variety of reasons, but for those meetings where you can be a virtual attendee, there’s Skype and other similar video conferencing platforms. Also, you might want to consider investing in mobile tools like tablets and smart phones. For most entrepreneurs a 9-5 workday is nothing but a dream. In today’s world, business happens all day, every day so many businesses could benefit from having “on-the-go” access for owners and employees.
5. Drink to your health
It may seem like common sense but for a busy entrepreneur it’s not always top of mind to always keep water and snacks like fresh fruit and nuts within easy reach. When you are working the long hours entrepreneurs typically work, nutrition and proper exercise may not be top-of-mind. It’s important to keep yourself healthy so you will have the energy to accomplish everything you need to do each day.
