Cash in on Tourism Season

July 9, 2018

Canadian summer brings with it lots of sunshine, longer days and an influx of tourists ready to soak in our spectacular country from coast to coast.

These visitors come from all over the world ready to explore Canada and spend their vacation dollars – or euros, yen, pesos or pounds – for a memorable local experience. The question is, are we ready for them?

Here are three ways to prepare your business to be more tourist-friendly, and a must-see the next time they (or their friends) are in town.

1. Let them pay in their own currency. Converting a foreign currency on the spot can be frustrating for shoppers. Do the heavy lifting for them by offering the Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) feature by Moneris®, which gives international customers the option to pay in their own currency when using a foreign Visa® or Mastercard® credit or debit card[1]. This in-store option makes it easy and convenient for travellers to track the cost of their purchases.

2. Expand your payment options. While most Canadians choose from a handful of payment methods, your international customers might be better prepared to pay with the cards they regularly use at home. With 2018 named the Canada-China Year of Tourism by the Government of Canada, consider expanding your credit card payment options to include international card brands such as UnionPay® for Chinese tourists or JCB® for Japanese tourists. Promote the acceptance of these cards with storefront signage to attract tourists on the lookout for options, and online for those vacationers doing research before boarding their planes.

3. Simplify your signs. Make your business easy to navigate, understand and shop by keeping your non-English speaking customers in mind. When you can, use universal symbols on signage to visually guide your international shoppers through your store, such as hanger symbols for dressing rooms or credit card decals at the cash register. Keep your written signs simple for easy translation, or keep a picture dictionary or translation app handy for quick translations with your customers. That extra effort could be all it takes to encourage a foreign customer to make a return visit, or recommend your business to a fellow traveller.

These small updates can help transform your business into a more welcoming destination for international visitors, and inspire the positive recommendations that future shoppers are looking for.
